Hijack is Modern Warfare 4's new objective mode. Both teams fight over one Data Spike. You carry it, throw it or pass it to the enemy's Comm Station, then plant it there. A planted Spike scores points over time, and you get a bonus if the upload finishes before they stop it.
It's also one of the three modes the CDL plays in its 2027 season, next to Hardpoint and Search and Destroy. Infinity Ward built it with pro players' feedback. It takes the spot Overload had in Black Ops 7.
The easiest way to think about it: getting the Spike there plays like a carry mode, and holding the plant plays like a Hardpoint hill.
How Hijack works
| MW4 Hijack | |
|---|---|
| Round | 4 minutes |
| Win | First to 300 points |
| Sides | Teams swap sides between rounds |
| The Spike | Starts around the middle of the map |
| Moving it | Carry it, throw it or pass it to a teammate |
| Scoring | Plant it at the enemy Comm Station. It scores over time, plus a bonus if the upload finishes |
| Stopping it | Defenders abort the upload by defusing the Spike |
| The carrier | Loses their lethal. The lethal button throws the Spike instead |
| Hardcore | Also in Hardcore, with a limited HUD, friendly fire and no health regen |
The Spike goes back to the middle in three cases. Nobody picks it up in time after a drop, it's thrown out of bounds, or the other team defuses it. Every reset starts a new race for it.
Planting the Spike also counts toward your killstreak meter.
The race for the Spike
Every round, and every reset, starts with both teams going for the Spike in the middle. Don't send all six players straight at it. Win the fights around it first, then pick it up. A Spike grabbed in the middle of an open fight usually just gets dropped again.
Treat the middle as the most important part of the map. The Spike drags fights away from it, so always have a plan to take it back.
Carrying the Spike
- Keep it moving. A Spike sitting still gives the other team time to set up. Carry it, throw it to a teammate, or grab it again fast after a fight.
- Pass instead of dying with it. If you're about to lose a fight, get it to a teammate first. A dropped Spike that nobody picks up in time goes back to the middle and the race starts over.
- Don't throw it off the map. A throw out of bounds resets it to the middle too.
- You're down a lethal. The lethal button throws the Spike while you hold it, so you can't use your own lethal. Your teammates' grenades have to do that job.
How RankKD helps: RankKD puts every carry, plant and defuse on the timeline, with your deaths while carrying.
Escorting the carrier
Infinity Ward's own advice is to protect the carrier. That doesn't mean standing next to them:
- Clear the route ahead. Push the lane the carrier is about to walk down and make the defenders fight you instead.
- Don't stack on the Spike. Bunched-up players around the carrier are one grenade away from losing it.
- Bring the tools for the job. With the carrier's lethal gone, the rest of the team's equipment and killstreaks clear the way.
- Be ready to pick it up. If the carrier goes down, the closest teammate grabs the Spike before it resets.
Holding the plant
Planting is only half the job. Set up before their counterattack arrives, and hold the Spike until the upload finishes. From there it plays like holding a Hardpoint hill:
- Cover the ways in, not the Spike. Players stacked on top of it hand the other team an easy multi-kill.
- Funnel them. Lock the lanes so they can only come from one side.
- Eat their grenades. A Trophy System destroys up to three thrown or fired projectiles. Put it down before the grenades come.
- Heal between fights. Back off after a fight and let your health come back before you peek again. Quick Fix starts your regen when you get a kill or hold an objective.
Stopping their plant
- Cut off the carrier early. Work out where they're taking the Spike and get there first. Chasing them from behind is too late.
- When your carrier goes down far from home, go back. Their team now has the Spike, and your Comm Station needs players.
- Counterattack together, from more than one side. One player at a time through one door feeds their hold.
- Throw your utility first. Grenades and tacticals go in before you do.
- Defuse, then get ready to race. A defuse sends the Spike back to the middle, so the next fight starts straight away.
Sides and maps
Teams swap sides every round, so you attack a different Comm Station each time. Learn both. The CDL's 2027 map pool will have three Hijack maps, which haven't been named yet. MW4 Ranked Play is coming, but its modes and maps aren't out yet.
To plan a push on a map, open it on the Tac Board. The map guides show every core map.
Jobs on a Hijack team
- The carrier: takes the Spike forward and gets rid of it before dying with it.
- The escorts: clear the lane in front and pick the Spike up when the carrier goes down.
- The anchor: stays back to cut off their carrier and cover your Comm Station.
Like Hardpoint, the jobs move as the fight moves, and somebody has to fill the gap.
How RankKD shows your Hijack play
RankKD records every MW4 match on its own, so there's nothing to press. After the match, it reviews the footage and puts every kill and death on the timeline:
- Spike plays: your carries, plants and defuses, and your deaths while carrying.
- Deaths on the map: where you keep dying on each map.
- Trades: whether your deaths got traded, next to players at your rank.
- Receipts: every mistake in the coach's note links to the exact moment in the video, with your inputs on screen.
RankKD analyzes finished match recordings, with no live coaching. No overlays, no assists, no live tactical advice, no mods (how RankKD stays fair). It runs on Windows PC. Download RankKD.
MW4 Hijack FAQ
How do you win Hijack in MW4?
Get to 300 points. You score by planting the Data Spike at the enemy Comm Station. It scores over time while it's planted, and you get a bonus if the upload finishes.
What happens when the Data Spike is dropped?
Anyone can pick it up. If nobody does in time, it goes back to the middle of the map. It also resets after a defuse, or if it's thrown out of bounds.
Can the Spike carrier use a lethal?
No. While you carry the Spike, your lethal button throws it instead.
Is Hijack in the CDL?
Yes. The CDL's 2027 season on MW4 plays Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and Hijack, with three Hijack maps in the pool.
What's the difference between Hijack and Overload?
Overload was Black Ops 7's carry mode: you delivered a device to the enemy's goal. In Hijack, you plant the Spike and then have to defend it while it scores. Hijack takes Overload's place as the third competitive mode.
