Overload is Black Ops 7's respawn objective mode, and it replaced Control. There's one device on the map, and both teams fight over it. Carry it into one of the two enemy zones near their starting spawn to score a point. Ranked Play uses the CDL's settings. First team to 8 points wins. Teams switch sides when a team hits 4 or the 5-minute half runs out. The rules here are up to date as of October 2026.
Quick Overload tips
- Switch to your pistol before you grab the ball if you run a pistol secondary. You skip the swap animation.
- Push the lane in front of the ball. Don't stack on your own carrier.
- Cut off the enemy carrier where they're going, not where they last pinged.
- When they have the ball and the kills, wrap. Don't push mid.
- If you can't stop their run, give it up and rotate to the next ball spawn.
- Always have a plan for mid.
How does Overload work in Black Ops 7?
Overload replaced Control as the third mode next to Hardpoint and Search & Destroy (SnD), in both the CDL and Ranked Play. In a CDL series it's the swing mode, Game 3 of a best-of-5.
There's only ever one device on the map. The first one of the match shows up in the center, and only one player can carry it at a time. Take it into either of the two enemy Overload zones, near the enemy team's starting spawn. Your team scores 1 point and a new device comes into play. Public playlists play it 6v6.
The game calls it the Overload Device, and some patch notes call it the EMP device. Players call it the ball. CDL stats count each delivered ball as a goal.
The rules have changed several times since launch. Guides that talk about Sudden Death overtime are out of date. So is any advice about resetting the ball on purpose.
What are the Ranked Overload rules?
Ranked Play uses the CDL's Overload settings and weapon restrictions. Here's what matters in a match:
- Score limit: first team to 8 points wins.
- Halves: the match has two halves, which the settings call rounds. A half ends when a team reaches 4 points or the 5-minute timer runs out. Then teams switch sides. The 5-minute timer came in with the April 14, 2026 update.
- The clock keeps running: since April 14, 2026, the clock keeps running while either team has the device. At the Season 03 launch it paused during possession, but that was reverted.
- No manual drops: the same update removed manual drops. A carrier can't drop the device on purpose to hand it off or reset it.
- Carrier ping: the enemy carrier's marker refreshes every 2 seconds, and the carrier outline and visual effects are on.
- Respawns: dying costs a bit more than in Hardpoint. Ranked Overload has a 3.5-second respawn delay (Hardpoint is 3 seconds) and no wave spawns.
- Doors: open by default in Ranked Overload since February 20, 2026.
- Forfeit: a team can only vote to forfeit after the first half.
What happens when Overload is tied?
A tie goes to Time To Beat overtime, not Sudden Death. If the second half ends level, you play overtime rounds:
- In OT round 1, the first team to score sets the time to beat, and the round ends.
- In OT round 2, the other team has to score first within that time to win.
- If the team that scored in OT round 1 scores again, it wins.
Each Time To Beat round lasts up to 5 minutes.
There's also carrier overtime, added in Season 01 (December 2025). If someone is carrying the device when the first half ends, the half runs up to 30 more seconds, until they score or die. The patch notes say it can also happen at the end of the match, but only when the carrier's team is down by 1. It's not clear if carrier overtime still runs in Ranked, or how the end-of-match version works with Time To Beat.
Where does the next Overload device spawn?
Device spawns are predictable in Ranked and the CDL. The first one spawns in the center. After that it cycles through three spots across the center, not at random. Gridlock is the exception, with just one ball spawn. Learn where the next ball spawns on each map and get there first.
In Ranked and the CDL, the ball has a 10-second spawn delay, a 15-second reset delay and a 10-second reset warning. Two terms to know:
- Dropped: the carrier died and the ball is sitting where they went down.
- Reset: after a score, the ball goes back to a center spawn. Nobody can pick it up until the short reset timer ends.
What's different in Ranked Overload vs public matches?
Habits from pubs don't carry over cleanly:
- Team size. Public Overload is 6v6. The official mode guide came out in September 2025, before Ranked Overload launched in Season 02. Treat its team-size tips, like how many players should guard the carrier, as pub advice.
- No carrier radar. In pubs, the carrier gets a personal radar that shows nearby enemies. Ranked removed it on February 13, 2026 to match CDL rules.
- No snipers. Snipers are restricted in Ranked Overload. They're only allowed in SnD.
Which maps are in Ranked Overload?
The last confirmed Ranked Overload pool is from Season 05 (July 2026). Dot Esports' Season 05 list has Den, Exposure, Scar, Gridlock, Frequency and Vertigo. Season 06, the last BO7 Ranked season, added Exposure back to the Ranked Play map pool without naming a mode. The CDL played its 2026 season's Overload on only Den, Exposure, Gridlock and Scar, so Frequency and Vertigo were Ranked-only. Ranked Overload launched in Season 02 on Den, Exposure and Scar. Season 05 added Frequency and Vertigo.
What roles do you need in Overload?
When your team has the ball, there are three jobs: carry it, cover the carrier and make space.
AR players: the ball may be your win condition. In lower ranks, AR players tend to leave the ball to someone else. That makes Overload one of the hardest modes for them to win. If you play AR, pick up the ball. Carrying it may be how you win.
Everyone else makes space. See how to escort the carrier below.
How do you carry the ball in Overload?
Pull your pistol before you grab it
The carrier can only use a pistol. Since Season 01, picking up the ball switches you to your pistol. You get a backup pistol if your secondary isn't one. Fixes in December 2025 and on February 27, 2026 closed the bugs that let carriers keep their primary or other weapons.
If you run a pistol secondary, switch to it before you grab the ball. You skip the swap animation. It's a small habit that helps a lot.
What changes when you carry in Ranked
Once you grab the ball, you have no radar and no way to drop or pass it. The clock keeps running too. Lean on your teammates for info. The ball is always marked on the HUD and Tac-Map. While you carry it, the enemy only sees that marker update as a ping, every 2 seconds in Ranked. Your carrier outline and visual effects are on too. Expect defenders to read your route from those pings and get to the choke point ahead of you. See the Ranked rules for the rest.
How RankKD helps: RankKD puts every carry, drop and score on the timeline. It also shows your deaths while carrying and the runs where you over-extended on the delivery.
How do you escort the carrier?
Push the lane, don't stack on the ball
Don't group up on the ball. Keep challenging forward. Make the defenders turn and fight you, and open space for your teammates. It's not all about kills.
Keep the carrier alive and moving. That's faster than fighting over a dropped ball and turning that spot into a kill box.
How RankKD helps: when a teammate has the ball, RankKD shows whether you stacked on them or pushed out the lane in front of them.
How do you defend in Overload?
Cut off the carrier where they're going, not where they pinged
The enemy carrier's icon only updates every few seconds, every 2 seconds in Ranked. By the time you see a ping, they've already moved on. Read their route from the pings and rotate early. Work out where they're taking the ball and beat them to the choke point.
When your carrier goes down, go back
If your carrier goes down while you're past halfway, rush back toward your spawn. Cut off their carrier before they score.
Wrap when they have the ball and the kills
When they have the ball and they're winning fights, wrap. Rotate around to get between their carrier and your zones. Don't go mid.
Line up a nade on the carrier
When all your team needs is the carrier dead, line up a grenade on them and play the fight with a teammate. Run frags full-time over Semtex. Learn high-arc sky nades too. A good one drops right on the ball.
Give up the run you can't stop and play the next ball
After a score, or when you can't stop their run, stop chasing kills. Rotate to where the next ball will spawn. Clear and hold that spot before anyone can pick it up. You don't need the kills to do it.
The next ball isn't up straight away. Ranked has a 10-second spawn delay and a 15-second reset delay. Nobody can pick it up until that timer ends, so get there and lock down the area first.
Always have a plan for mid
Mid is the most valuable area to control. The ball will pull you away from it at times. Always have a plan to take it back or keep it. For rotation timing in the other respawn mode, see Hardpoint rotations.
How does RankKD show your Overload play?
After every match, RankKD goes through the footage and breaks down your Overload games:
- Objective play, ball by ball. Every carry, drop and score on the timeline.
- Carrier discipline. Your deaths while carrying, runs where you over-extended on the delivery, and how your carrying balances against your slaying.
- Delivery timing. Whether you pushed the ball into a stacked defense or ran it with a numbers advantage.
- Escort play. Whether you stacked on your carrier or pushed out the lane in front of them when a teammate had the ball.
- SR by mode. How much SR you gained and lost in each mode over a session. You'll see if Overload is where your SR goes.
Every match also gets an S-to-D grade, scored against your own recent matches, plus the three things to fix first. RankKD grades every gunfight and maps where you die by callout. It compares your gaps with players at your rank and the rank above. The coach's note links every mistake to the exact moment in the video, with your inputs on screen.
Fair play: RankKD analyzes your match after it ends, never while you play. No overlays, no assists, no live info, no in-game presence and no mods.
RankKD records every match on Windows PC automatically. There's nothing to press. It supports Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4, and paid plans add the full coaching. See coaching plans for plan details, and Black Ops 7 on RankKD for more.

Overload FAQ
How many points do you need to win Overload in Ranked?
First to 8 points, under the CDL settings Ranked uses. Each half has a 5-minute timer. Sides switch when a team reaches 4 or that timer runs out.
What replaced Control in BO7 Ranked?
Overload. It joined Hardpoint and SnD as the third mode in both Ranked Play and the CDL. Treyarch wanted a new competitive mode because Control's match flow swung between big highs and real lows.
Are snipers allowed in Ranked Overload?
No. Snipers are restricted in Ranked Overload and Hardpoint. They're only allowed in SnD.
Can you use your primary while carrying the ball?
No. Picking up the ball switches you to your pistol, with a backup pistol if your secondary isn't one. If you run a pistol secondary, switch to it before you pick up the ball to skip the swap animation.
Does the Overload carrier have radar in Ranked?
No. In pubs the carrier gets a personal radar, but Ranked removed it on February 13, 2026 to match CDL rules.
Can you drop the ball on purpose?
No. Manual drops were removed on April 14, 2026. Any advice about resetting the ball on purpose is out of date.
