To VOD review your CoD gameplay, record your matches. Start with a map you lost or played close, not a blowout win. Go through it death by death. First ask whether the fight was lost before the first shot, because you got there late or were looking the wrong way. Then look for what repeats, and turn it into one to three things to practice.
Steps at a glance
Step 1: Record matches you can keep
Record your Ranked games so you can go back through every kill and death.
How to record your matches
On Windows PC, RankKD records every match automatically, with nothing to press. It spots the lobby, starts recording before the match and files every match in your library. It reviews the match after it ends, never while you play (more below).
Why footage matters more in Ranked
Killcam is off in Hardpoint, SnD and Overload under the CDL's BO7 settings (V1.1). Activision says BO7 Ranked Play uses the same settings, maps, modes and weapon restrictions as the CDL. So expect no killcam after you die. Your own footage shows where you were and where you were looking, but not the enemy's angle.
Know what your recording shows
Split your review by view. Use your own POV to judge how you took your fights. For team play, watch the minimap. Your teammates' arrows show your setups, routes, splits and rotations. A lot of team review is minimap work, and pro teams review the same way.
There's a limit. In the CDL settings Ranked uses, the minimap is on with weapon pings. Radar Always On is off, and there are no enemies on the compass. So your recording shows your team's arrows, and enemies mostly through weapon pings. Spectator or broadcast footage also shows the enemy team and where they spawn. That's the view coaches usually work from.
Step 2: Pick a map you lost or played close
Pick a map you lost or played close, and skip the ones you won easily. After a series you won 3-1, there's little to gain from watching most of it back, except maybe the SnD rounds.
But don't let a win hide a habit
Even in a win, pull up the SnD rounds where you overextended. Look for patterns like having a 4v2 and then throwing two lives late in the round. Don't let a habit slide against weaker teams. It won't go away when the pressure is higher.
Judge decisions, not the stat line
A player can go positive with a lot of hill time and still be the reason the game is close. Review the decisions, not the scoreboard.
In Hardpoint, check the plan before the plays
If you play as a set team, pause and quiz each other. How do you break P1 from each side? How do you hold it from each side? How do you rotate to P2 from each spawn? All four players should give the same answer at once. If they can't, that's your first fix. Then grade the footage against the rules you agreed on. If your team normally plays a 3-1 split and runs a 2-2 off the P1 break, that's a mistake in itself.
Step 3: Go death by death with the checklist
On the map you picked, pause on each death and stop at the first question that explains it. You're looking for the two or three answers that keep coming up, not a verdict on every fight.
Quick reference
Every death
- Were you late?
- Where was your crosshair?
- Were you one shot and forcing it?
- Was it an ego chall?
- Were you fighting alone?
- Did that life matter? (Hardpoint and Overload)
- Did it get traded, and did your kills count?
- Was it comms?
Hardpoint: Did your position flip the spawns? When a spawn surprised you, what caused it? Where did your teammates spawn? Did you leave on time? Was scrap time worth it? Did you actually win the rotation? Did you break with utility, from more than one lane?
SnD: Did you play your life? Did you overheat with a lead, or give up a site for free? Did you play the clock? Did you play the same spot twice?
Overload: Was the carrier over-escorted? Did you rush back to cut off the enemy carrier? Did you go where the enemy carrier was heading? Did you secure the reset? Did you have a plan for mid? Were you chasing kills?
How RankKD helps: After every match, RankKD flags most of these for you, death by death. See how RankKD automates VOD review.
Every death
- Were you late? A lot of gunfights are lost before the first shot. You got there late, or you were looking the wrong way. Most deaths are decided about 3 seconds before the gunfight. Did you know where the enemy was coming from, with your gun up and pre-aimed there?
- Where was your crosshair? Check how close your crosshair was on each kill and death. Use map positions and sound cues to learn where it should already be.
- Were you one shot and forcing it? Health comes back fast in BO7. When you're one shot, back off, regen and re-peek. If you did the damage, did you follow up with a stun? Without one, they'll regen as you start shooting.
- Was it an ego chall? An ego chall is taking a fight from a disadvantage, like a 1v2. The player at the disadvantage often loses it.
- Were you fighting alone? Two players on the enemy's screen beat one. Slide out next to a teammate who's challenging instead of watching them die. When you're weak, say so and play bait for a teammate. If your team just got wiped, wait for your teammates and stop solo-challenging. Don't do anything on your own. Follow a teammate's arrow.
- Did that life matter? (Hardpoint and Overload) If you'll respawn at the back with your team anyway, it's a free death. Just run forward. But if you're the one player keeping a spawn block or the hill alive, your life is huge.
- Did it get traded, and did your kills count? A trade is a teammate killing the player who just killed you, right away. For your own kills, ask whether they were the ones that mattered. An off-hill pinch kill is close to useless if your team still doesn't get the hill.
- Was it comms? Did you tell your team what you were doing? Starting a defuse without telling the teammate who's baiting the angle for you is a bad decision.

Hardpoint
- Did your position flip the spawns? Draw a 50-yard line through the middle of the hill. With one teammate past it, the game tries to spawn the enemy deep, diagonal from that player. With two or more past it, expect the enemy to flip to any open quadrant behind you. That's a rule of thumb, not official spawn logic, and even pros don't read spawns right every time. Ask whether your position helped the team, like blocking a spawn, or just padded your kills. Roaming for kills like it's Team Deathmatch loses objectives and lets the enemy spawn in good spots.
- When a spawn surprised you, what caused it? Work out what put the enemy there. One likely cause is too many players too far past the 50-yard line on one side. Spawn logic changes between titles, so learn the habit, not the exact triggers.
- Where did your teammates spawn? A teammate spawning behind or next to you means your spawn hasn't moved. One spawning far across the map usually means an enemy is pressuring or blocking your spawn. Someone has to turn around and find them.
- Did you leave on time? Competitive BO7 hills last 1 minute, and the next hill shows up 10 seconds before it goes live. A wrap to block the spawn can be a good play and still lose you map control. Going with 40 seconds left on the hill instead of 20, with nobody rotating yet, gives the map away. That example is from MW3, and timings like that change by map and title.
- Was scrap time worth it? Scrap time is the last 5 to 10 seconds of a hill. If your whole squad is rotating and the game is close, try hanging back for it.
- Did you actually win the rotation? Getting to the hill isn't the same as winning the rotation. If you never killed the player rotating, or never even spotted them, you didn't win it. Check what happened to the enemy rotator.
- Did you break with utility, from more than one lane? Never try to break P1 without your tacticals. Spread out and hit the hill from every lane. Forcing the enemy to spawn out is the whole point of a break.
More in Hardpoint rotations.
SnD
- Did you play your life? It's the number one piece of SnD advice. While the bomb and site are in play, never let your team get outnumbered. A solo drill: record three SnD games and check every defensive death for over-aggression. Attackers still have to make the first move.
- Did you overheat with a lead, or give up a site for free? Turning a 4v2 into a 2v2 is a habit to train out. And very few bomb sites in CoD history reward letting the enemy plant and then retaking.
- Did you play the clock? Competitive BO7 SnD has 1:30 rounds, a 45-second bomb, a 5-second plant, a 7.5-second defuse and silent plant on. Learn the plant and defuse times so you can trap opponents in spots they can't win from.
- Did you play the same spot twice? Get three kills from one spot and the enemy will look for you there. Ranked switches sides every round, so check what you did the next time you were on that side.

Overload
Activision's BO7 Overload guide works as a checklist:
- Was the carrier over-escorted? Don't group up on the ball. Keep challenging forward, so the defenders have to turn and fight you.
- When your carrier went down and you were past halfway, did you rush back toward your spawn to cut off the enemy carrier?
- Did you move to where the enemy carrier was heading, not where the ping showed them?
- Did you lock down the reset area before it became available?
- Did you have a plan to take or keep mid?
- Were you chasing kills? Kills away from the device or the Overload zone rarely help.
More in the Overload guide.
Step 4: Look for what repeats across matches
Read both sides. Pro teams scout each other's habits. They look for the player who likes solo plays in SnD and the spot someone plays on every map. They check whether a team goes for kills instead of setting up after a plant. Check your own footage for the same things. Doing the same stuff over and over makes you easy to read.
Keep notes per map. The CDL V1.1 pool is 16 map and mode combos:
- SnD: Den, Fringe, Gridlock, Hacienda, Raid, Sake
- Hardpoint: Colossus, Den, Gridlock, Hacienda, Sake, Scar
- Overload: Den, Exposure, Gridlock, Scar
A small pool means your notes pay off fast. The pool has already changed during BO7, so check the current list. Ranked's pool has also changed separately each season. New to Hacienda? Start with Hacienda callouts.
Study the team that beat you. Compare yourself to what they did to beat you, or to the top pro teams on that map. Then add your own twist. Pro teams do this too. They watch a rival's VOD to work out its rules, then run those rules cleaner. Completed BO7-season CDL matches on callofdutyleague.com have a free "Watch Match VOD" link.
How RankKD helps: RankKD finds the repeats across your matches. Death heatmaps group where you die by callout, and stats by map, mode and weapon show your worst map and why.
Step 5: Pick 1 to 3 fixes and practice them
Keep the list short. Review one map or a couple of hills at a time. More than that is too much to take in. Work on 1 to 3 concrete goals at a time, like reading enemy spawns or slide cancels.
What that looks like. In one pro coaching session with a hardstuck BO7 Diamond 1 player, the biggest thing holding him back was his settings. His game sense was already above his rank. On top of that, he got three fixes. Stop over-challenging after winning a fight: take your time, regen and peek. Practice sky nades and nading the hill. And pick up the Overload ball, his best way to win games. That's one player's list, not a rule for the rank. Stuck yourself? See how to stop being hardstuck in BO7 Ranked.
Practice spawns where they repeat. Ranked shows you the same spawn situation once or twice a night. You learn spawns by seeing it 20 times in 20 minutes, not over 20 days. Set up a custom game on the map you struggle with most. Add one bot through CODCaster. After each kill, note where the enemy spawns. Then scale up from 1v1 to 4v4.
Step 6: Check the fix in your next recording
Call it out, then check the tape. Call out where you think the enemy is spawning, even if you get it wrong. You'll learn spawns faster. Those callouts end up on your recording, so your next review can check them. A good loop: play a Hardpoint match, then do some analysis or drills before the next one.
Teams: test plans. Run one plan the same way in scrims. If it keeps failing, go back to the VOD, work out why and change it, say from a 2-2 split to a 3-1. If it keeps working, drill it.
How often should you VOD review?
Solo: Set a daily practice window with 1 to 3 goals at a time. Add small, measurable goals for the next month.
As a team: About 30 minutes a day is enough, on one map or a couple of hills, not every map every day. Review together. If one player works it all out and the other three don't get the plan, it won't stick. All four should watch, talk it through and agree.
How does RankKD automate VOD review?
RankKD records for you and does a coach-style first pass on the checklist and the patterns. You start your review from the deaths that keep coming up.
Every match recorded, nothing to press. RankKD spots the lobby, starts recording before the match and files every match in a library. Each one shows your rank and SR before and after. Game audio, your mic and party chat are on separate tracks, so you can listen back when the problem is comms. Your mouse, keyboard or controller inputs are recorded with the footage.
The checklist, flagged for you. After the match, RankKD grades every gunfight and matches your deaths to the questions above:
- Late, or crosshair in the wrong place? First-shot advantage (who shot first, and whether your pre-aim earned it) and centering (how close your crosshair sits to where enemies appear).
- One shot and forcing it? Fights you took while already hurt, and deaths while sprinting, reloading or re-peeking without info.
- Ego chall or fighting alone? Outnumbered fights.
- Traded? Your trade rate, compared with your rank.
- Pushing out after a won fight? Deaths right after your own kill.
- Hardpoint: spawn-flip deaths and late rotations, hill by hill.
- SnD: first deaths in a round, round by round.
The patterns, found for you. Death heatmaps group where you die by callout. Stats by map, mode and weapon show your worst map and why. RankKD also tracks SR gained and lost per mode, and tilt across a session. Every stat is compared with your rank and the rank above.
Fixes you can check. Each match gets a grade from S to D against your own recent matches, plus your top 3 fixes in order. Session goals come from your gaps and are tracked across sessions alongside your rank journey. Every mistake in the coach's note links to the exact moment in the video, with your inputs on screen.
Fair play. RankKD analyzes your match after it ends, never while you play. No overlays, no assists, no live info, no mods, no in-game presence. Read the anti-cheat disclosure.
RankKD records up to 4K at 120 frames per second (how it works). The Free plan records up to 1080p at 60 frames per second and includes the match library, rank journey, clips and one full breakdown (coaching plans). More: automated VOD review, Call of Duty coaching and RankKD for Black Ops 7.

FAQ
How long should a CoD VOD review take?
As a team, about 30 minutes a day on one map or a couple of hills. More than that is too much to take in. Solo, keep to a set daily window and 1 to 3 goals. More in how often should you VOD review.
Should I review my wins or my losses?
Start with a map you lost or played close. Don't write off a series you won, though. Check the SnD rounds where you overextended, and train out habits like throwing a late-round 4v2.
Is there a killcam in Black Ops 7 Ranked?
Expect not. Killcam is off in all three modes under CDL V1.1, and Activision says Ranked uses the CDL's settings. Your recording shows what you saw before you died, not the killer's view.
How do I record my CoD gameplay for VOD review?
On Windows PC, RankKD records every match automatically, with nothing to press, and reviews it after the match. More in how to record your matches.
How do I review my own gameplay without a team?
Use your own POV to judge how you took your fights. Then run the solo drills: check your crosshair on every kill and death, and check every defensive SnD death for over-aggression.
Where can I watch pro CoD VODs?
Completed BO7-season CDL matches on callofdutyleague.com have a free "Watch Match VOD" link. Compare yourself to the top teams on that map and add your own twist.
