A Call of Duty (COD) VOD review means watching your match back to find the decisions that cost you the map. Keep it simple. Start with a map you lost or played close. Judge your fights from your own POV and team play from the minimap. Grade the decisions, not the stat line.
RankKD records and reviews every match. The map you lost or played close is already broken down when you pull it up. RankKD does the scrubbing. It picks your top fixes and links every mistake to the seconds of video that prove it, so your review time goes on the decisions.

Why pros review their VODs
Decisions the scoreboard hides. You can go positive with a lot of hill time and still be the reason the game is close. The scoreboard won't show you that. The footage will.
Habits a win covers up. Even after a series you won 3-1, pull up the Search and Destroy (S&D) rounds where you overextended. Look for late rounds where you had a 4v2 and threw two lives.
Deaths with no killcam. Under the CDL's Black Ops 7 settings, Killcam is off in Hardpoint, S&D and Overload. Your own recording shows how you died from your side: the angle you were holding and what you were checking. Ranked Play uses the same CDL settings, so pro matches are played on the same rules as yours. See where to watch pro VODs.
How do coaches run a VOD review?
1. Start with a map you lost or played close
Don't review everything you recorded. Pick one map you lost or played close, and review that.
2. Watch your POV for fights and the minimap for team play
Judge your fights from your own POV. For team play, watch your teammates' arrows on the minimap. They show your setups, routes, splits and rotations. A lot of team review is minimap work.
In the BO7 CDL settings Ranked uses, Radar Always On is off and enemies don't show on the compass. So in your own recording, enemies mostly show up as weapon pings. Spectator or broadcast footage shows the whole enemy team and where they spawn.
3. Hardpoint teams: check the plan before the plays
Know how you're going to break a hardpoint from each side, hold it from each side, and rotate from each spawn. Then grade the footage against your own rules. In Ranked Play, especially solo, minimap awareness and playing off your team matter most here.
4. Ask whether each kill helped the objective
Make sure the kills you're getting are kills that matter to the objective.
5. Check rotations and spawns
Getting to the hill first isn't winning the rotation. Is everyone on the enemy team accounted for? Do you know who is rotating and where they are?
When an enemy spawn surprises you, work out what your positions caused. Spawn logic changes from title to title. Don't memorize one game's spawns. Get in the habit of asking what caused each one. More in Hardpoint rotations.
6. Solo: start with your deaths
- Your deaths. Where did the enemy come from? Were you late, or looking the wrong way?
- Crosshair on every kill and death. Record your Ranked games. Check how close your crosshair was on every kill and death. Use map and sound cues to learn where it should already be. See gunfight fundamentals.
- S&D deaths. Record three S&D games and check every defensive death for over-aggression. Attackers still have to make the first move. See S&D tips.
Why players skip VOD review
You need the footage. You can only review the matches you kept. And finding the moments that matter means scrubbing through the whole match.
You don't know what to look for. The stat line is the easy thing to grade. Grade the decisions instead.
How RankKD records and reviews every match
The hard part of a VOD review is having the footage and finding the moments. RankKD handles both. It starts recording at the lobby and files every match in your library. After the match, it marks every kill and death on the timeline.
RankKD records up to 4K at 120 frames per second on Pro and Elite, and 1080p at 60 frames per second on Free, with your mouse, keyboard or controller inputs. Game sound, your mic and party chat go on separate tracks. It also logs your rank and SR before and after each match.
After every match, RankKD reviews the footage. The map you lost or played close comes with:
- Match grade, S to D, against your own recent matches.
- Top 3 fixes, in order. Review one map or a couple of hills at a time. More than that is too much to take in. So RankKD leads with the three habits costing you the most, not a list of every mistake.
- Receipts. Every mistake in RankKD's coach's note links to the exact seconds of video that prove it, with your inputs on screen.
What RankKD checks in every match
- Your worst map, and why, with where you die most on it, by callout (see Hacienda callouts).
- Your fights: fights won, who landed the first shot, time-to-kill, centering, reaction time and accuracy by range per weapon.
- Objective play, hill by hill and round by round, with every kill and death on the timeline.
- Teamplay: deaths traded, and your trade rate against your rank.
- Rotations and spawns: late rotations to the next hill and spawn-flip deaths in Hardpoint.
- Decisions: deaths while sprinting, reloading or repeeking without info, dying right after your own kill, taking fights already hurt, outnumbered fights, and how your play changes after back-to-back deaths.
- S&D: first deaths of the round and deaths early in the round.
Every stat is compared against your rank and the rank above. RankKD turns your gaps into a playbook and session goals, and tracks them across sessions. It also shows your rank journey: SR match by match, division lines and SR to go. See BO7 ranked SR explained and how to stop being hardstuck.
Comms are on the record. Your mic and party chat are on their own tracks. When you watch it back, you can hear the call, or the missing one.
Fair play. RankKD analyzes after the match, never while you play. No overlays, no assists, no live info, no in-game presence, no mods. Read the full disclosure.
RankKD runs on Windows PC and supports Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4 at launch, with MW4 Ranked Play supported from day one when it goes live.
What RankKD does for each step
| The step | What RankKD does |
|---|---|
| Start with a map you lost or played close | Every match recorded and reviewed, with a match grade from S to D against your own recent matches |
| Your POV for fights | Every gunfight graded: who landed the first shot, who won, time-to-kill and centering |
| Ask whether each kill helped the objective | Objective play hill by hill and round by round, with every kill and death on the timeline |
| Check rotations and spawns | Late rotations to the next hill and spawn-flip deaths in Hardpoint |
| Solo: start with your deaths | Every death on the timeline, deaths while sprinting, reloading or repeeking without info, and first deaths of the round in S&D |
| Keep it to a few fixes | Your top 3 fixes, in order, each with the seconds of video that prove it |
Team review still belongs to the team. It only works if all four players watch, talk it through and agree. Take the map you got smoked on back to your team and watch it together. RankKD's receipts give everyone the same clips.
FAQ
What is a COD VOD review?
VOD stands for video on demand. A COD VOD review means watching your recorded match back to judge your decisions. Use your own POV for how you took your fights, and the minimap for team play.
How long should a VOD review take?
For a team, about 30 minutes a day is enough. Review one map or a couple of hills, not every map.
Can I review my gameplay without a team?
Yes. Start with your deaths. Where did the enemy come from? Were you late, or looking the wrong way? Most deaths are decided about 3 seconds before the gunfight. Check whether you actually won your rotations and whether your kills helped the objective. Then check how close your crosshair was on every kill and death. In S&D, go through three games and check every defensive death for over-aggression. Reviewing the team plan only works if all four players take part.
How do I record my matches for a VOD review?
RankKD records every match on Windows PC automatically, with nothing to press. It spots the lobby, starts recording before the match and files every match in your library, with your rank and SR before and after. After the match, RankKD reviews the footage and marks every kill and death on the timeline.
Where can I watch pro CoD VODs?
Completed CDL matches on callofdutyleague.com have a "Watch Match VOD" link. Those matches are played on the same ruleset Ranked uses.
How much does RankKD cost?
Recording is free, with one full breakdown on us. Pro is $9.99 a month for 100 full analyses. See Call of Duty coaching for the fundamentals RankKD checks.
Does RankKD give me info during a match?
No. RankKD analyzes after the match, never while you play: no overlays, no assists, no live info, no in-game presence, no mods.
