To win more gunfights in CoD, have your crosshair where the enemy will show up before they show up. Then you only need a small adjustment, not a big flick. Take fights you're ahead in. Skip the ones you're late to or outnumbered in. Get your gun up before they can see you, not halfway through a sprint or slide. Play close enough to a teammate that you get traded. Don't take the next fight while you're one-shot, and don't reload when you still have plenty of ammo.
The basics work in any CoD. The movement tips and numbers are for BO7, up to date as of Season 06 (October 2026). Stuck at one rank? Pair this with how to stop being hardstuck in BO7 Ranked.

What is crosshair placement in CoD?
Crosshair placement, or centering, means keeping your crosshair where an enemy is most likely to appear before you see them. Think of the headglitch, doorway or corner you're about to clear. It's one of the biggest factors in winning a gunfight. Don't run around with your aim on the floor. Looking up and then flicking sideways is two movements instead of one, and fights are won in milliseconds.
How do you know where to pre-aim?
Use spawns, the minimap, sound and where your teammates are to work out which angle an enemy has to come from. Pre-aim that angle before you round the corner. Get it right and you come out of cover already aimed, with only small adjustments left to make.
Should you center on the head or the chest?
Aim at chest height when you clear a corner an enemy can strafe out of, not head height. Your first shots kick up into the upper chest and head on their own. On a headglitch, where only the head shows, aim at the top of the cover instead. If someone could slide out of a corner, aim even lower.
How RankKD helps: RankKD checks your centering in every gunfight. It shows how far off your crosshair was when the enemy appeared, with the clip and your inputs on screen.
Should you take this gunfight?
A lot of gunfights are lost before anyone shoots. Usually it's not your aim. You got to the spot late, or you were late on the rotation. The other way to lose before you shoot is taking a fight you're behind in. Before you take one, ask yourself if you have the advantage. Taking on a 1v2 is an ego challenge, and the player who's outnumbered usually loses. If that sounds like your Hardpoint deaths, read Hardpoint rotations.
How do you peek in CoD without giving the fight away?
Shoulder for info, then commit
Shouldering means strafing quickly in and out at a corner so the enemy only sees your shoulder. Use it to get info, bait shots and set up team shots. Shoulder the corner and find the enemy. Put your crosshair on that exact spot, then commit. If they shoot at your shoulder, you're already back behind cover.
Re-peek already aimed
Before you re-peek, keep your crosshair on the enemy's spot through the cover. Then when you swing out, all you have to do is shoot. CoD favors the player who peeks. Come around the corner already centered and you get the first shot off before they can react. The faster you turn and fire, the bigger that edge.
If a defender is pre-aimed at a tight peek, swing wider than they expect or come from an off-angle. Their crosshair will be where you would have been.
Prefire known spots
If an enemy shoulders you, or you expect a re-peek from a known spot, start shooting before they fully come around the corner. If the prefire gets nothing, back up, reload behind cover and start shouldering again.
When a peek goes wrong, don't force it
Lost the first exchange? Once you're out of sight you have three options: re-challenge, reposition or wait. Reposition when you can. It wins more of these fights than popping straight back up. If you do re-challenge, drop back down and regen first. Then come back up already aimed.
The one pump on a headglitch
Slide to the headglitch and let your character start to go prone for a split second. Then sprint back up and center on the way up, so you're lined up as you reappear. That's the one pump. Use it once, get your kill and get back in cover. Do it over and over and it turns into snaking (spamming crouch, prone and sprint behind cover). That's frowned upon in pro and Challengers play.
How do you strafe and track in CoD gunfights?
Keep moving in fights and while you hold an angle. Use small, full-speed left-right strafes behind a headglitch or out in the open. It barely looks like anything on your screen, but it makes you harder to hit on theirs.
Does strafing still give you aim assist in BO7? (controller)
Only at minimum strength. Strafing alone gets you the weakest aim assist in BO7. For full strength, your right stick has to be tracking the target too. Treyarch's Nov 21, 2025 update cut the penalty for moving only the left stick from 35% to 25%.
Left stick heavy, right stick light (controller)
Against someone strafing or sliding at a headglitch or mid range, track mostly with your left stick by moving your body. Keep the right stick light, just for recoil and small corrections. In BO7, keep your right stick moving with the target anyway, or you only get minimum aim assist.
Missing at range, and learning recoil
Missing your first couple of shots at range? Stop holding full auto and tap fire, so the muzzle flash and recoil don't hide the target. Learn each gun's recoil before you rely on it. Turn on bullet impacts (Graphics > Quality) and spray at a wall without fighting the recoil, so you can see where it goes. Then practice pulling against it. Pull down slow and steady on the right stick. Don't yank it.
When should you reload, and when should you back off?
Don't reload after a few shots if you still have plenty of ammo. Getting caught mid-reload puts you at a big disadvantage. Reload once you've backed out of the fight and you're behind cover. In BO7, switching to your pistol is always faster than reloading your primary. If you run a pistol and your primary runs dry mid-fight, switch to it instead of reloading.
Don't take the next fight one-shot
Back off behind cover and let your health regen. Then re-peek, or let a teammate take the fight. Health comes back fast in BO7, so you can afford to wait.
It works the other way too. Once you've damaged an enemy, don't give them time to regen. Push while they're weak. If you can't finish them right away, stun them first. Otherwise they'll be back to full health by the time you start shooting.
Some things you lean on in pubs aren't in BO7 Ranked. Stim Shot is on the CDL restricted list, which Ranked follows, so there's no stimming mid-fight. Perk Specialty bonuses are off in Ranked, so you don't get Enforcer's speed and health regen boost after a kill. And sniper aim assist has been off in Ranked since Season 02, to match CDL settings.
How RankKD helps: RankKD flags the fights you took while already hurt, your deaths while reloading and your deaths right after your own kill.
What is trading in CoD, and how do you play for trades?
A trade is when your teammate kills the player who just killed you, right away, so neither team comes out ahead. "Get the trade" means get that follow-up kill.
Play close enough to be traded. Push with a teammate instead of sliding out alone. When you can, hit a defender from two sides at once. Whoever they shoot, the other player gets the kill. If a teammate is already fighting someone, shoot the same enemy.
Two players on an enemy's screen are better than one. Even sliding out just to split their attention beats letting your teammate die in a 1v1. Off a wall bounce, have one player go low and the other go high. If the first one only gets the enemy one-shot, the second is right there for the trade. An untraded kill gives the other team a free advantage: their player doesn't have to run back.
Trades and player advantage in Hardpoint and SnD
In Hardpoint, two kills and staying alive is worth more than three kills and dying right away.
Win the first fight of a rotation and the enemy players respawn one at a time. That makes your hold close to guaranteed, since it's basically a 4v3. If your team has killed four, push out and take fights for space. Don't turtle in your spawn.
Opening kills swing SnD rounds. In the CDL's 2020 numbers (from Modern Warfare 2019), the team that got first blood won the round 69% of the time. That's a 2020 stat, not a BO7 one. More in SnD tips. For the third Ranked mode, see the Overload guide.
How RankKD helps: RankKD shows whether your deaths got traded, your trade rate compared with players at your rank, and the outnumbered fights you took.
BO7 movement tips for gunfights
BO7 uses Omnimovement from Black Ops 6, so you can sprint, slide and dive in any direction. It's toned down a little, and there's one new move: the Wall Jump, which most players call the wall bounce. You can aim down sights while sliding, diving and wall jumping without any perk. Guides that say you need Dexterity are talking about the beta. Slides also got a little slower and shorter at launch.
Stop sprinting before the angle, not on it
A common way to lose a Ranked fight: sprint-sliding around a headglitch for a split second instead of staying aimed in. Finish any jump-slide before you get to the angle. Aim in out of the slide instead of sliding around from the hip. Start your slide early so it's done and your gun is up by the time you come out of a door. Wall bounce well behind cover so you're ready when you show up.
Every BO7 gun has a short delay before it can fire after you sprint. That delay gets longer coming out of a tac sprint, a slide or a dive. (In BO7 pubs, Tac Sprint isn't a default. It comes from the Tac Sprinter perk. The CDL settings Ranked uses have Tactical Sprint on.) In the patch notes we checked, the order never changes: sprint, then tac sprint, then slide, then dive. Slide-to-fire is usually about 200 ms slower than sprint-to-fire, and dive-to-fire is about another 80 ms slower than slide.
| Coming out of | Delay before you can fire (Ryden 45K, Mar 31, 2026 update) |
|---|---|
| Sprint | 130 ms |
| Tac sprint | 250 ms |
| Slide | 330 ms |
| Dive | 410 ms |
The exact numbers change by gun and by patch. The lesson doesn't: stop sprinting before the angle, not on it.
Jumping and mantling into fights
Treyarch raised jump penalties at launch to balance wall jumps in fights. On ARs and SMGs, the Jump ADS Speed Penalty went from 30% to 40%, and the Jump Sprint to Fire Penalty went from 35% to 45%. So aiming in and firing out of a sprint are both slower in the air than on the ground. Those numbers are from launch.
Don't mantle into a fight. A mantle locks you into it. Hold the left stick back and jump into the cover to wall bounce off it instead. You can tag the enemy and still play your life. You bounce toward wherever you're looking. Turn off Mantle Assist and Automatic Airborne Mantle too. An accidental mantle in a gunfight is the worst way to die.
Wall bounces are loud. Without Ninja, the enemy can hear you coming. Ninja is allowed in Ranked. Returning maps don't always play the way you remember, either. Hacienda came back from BO6 in Season 03 with new wall jump spots. See the Hacienda callouts.
How to aim better in CoD: practice that carries into fights
Set aside a block of time with one to three specific goals. Drill one thing until it's muscle memory. One drill that works: play a deathmatch and use a single movement technique every chance you get.
Warm up before Ranked with a private-match free-for-all against 10 Regular bots. Get about 100 to 150 kills with aim assist off, aiming at the chest. Then do it again with aim assist on, then again with small left-right strafes. To practice centering, set your crosshair lines and dot to Static in the Interface settings. When you can, warm up in 2v2s against real players instead. You'll warm up your comms and teamwork too.
Use BO7's Firing Range for recoil work. It has dummies at 10, 25, 50 and 100 m, live accuracy, damage and time-to-kill stats, and a recoil plate.
What controller sensitivity should you use?
There's no perfect number, so treat this as a starting point. Start at 1.6. Most CDL pros play between 1.6 and 1.7. New to CoD? Start at 1.4 to 1.45 instead, and move up toward 1.6 as you get comfortable. Don't stay low for long in BO7. The game is fast, and low sens makes it hard to track.
Review your own fights
Go through every kill and death in your recordings. Check how close your crosshair was to where the enemy showed up. If they came from a predictable angle, note the adjustment you could have made. If you were way off, ask what map or sound cue should have told you where they'd be. Count the fights you lost just because your gun wasn't up. Note whether you were in position to get traded. The full process is in how to VOD review in CoD.
How RankKD measures your gunfights
RankKD handles the measuring part of that VOD review checklist, so you can spend your review time on fixes. It records every match, and when the match ends, it grades every gunfight:
- Fights won, first hit and time-to-kill, plus first-shot advantage and reaction time.
- Crosshair placement and centering: how far off your crosshair was when each enemy showed up.
- Accuracy and headshot kills, plus how far away each fight was and your accuracy at each range, per weapon.
- Trades: deaths that got traded, your trade rate compared with your rank, and the outnumbered fights you took.
- Death discipline: deaths while sprinting, reloading or re-peeking without info, fights you took while already hurt, deaths right after your own kill and deaths while swapping weapons.
- Where you die: death heatmaps grouped by callout, and your first deaths in SnD.
Every stat is compared with players at your rank and the rank above. Each match gets an S-to-D grade, scored against your own recent matches, plus your top three fixes in order. The coach's note links every mistake to the exact moment in the video, with your inputs on screen. RankKD also sets session goals from your weak spots and shows how your SR moves match by match.
Fair play: RankKD analyzes your match after it ends, never while you play. No overlays, no assists, no live info, no in-game presence and no mods.
RankKD runs on Windows PC and supports Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4 at launch. More on Call of Duty coaching and VOD review.

FAQ
What is centering in Call of Duty?
Centering means keeping your crosshair where an enemy is most likely to appear, before you see them. That way you only need a small adjustment instead of a big flick.
Why do I keep losing gunfights in CoD?
Usually it's one of three things. You took the fight late or at a disadvantage, like a 1v2. Your gun wasn't up because you were still sprinting or sliding when they saw you. Or your crosshair wasn't where they showed up, so you had to make a big flick.
How do you aim better in CoD?
Keep your crosshair where enemies will show up before you see them. Learn each gun's recoil by spraying a wall with bullet impacts on, then pulling against it. Practice one thing at a time with one to three set goals. Set your crosshair lines and dot to Static while you work on centering.
Should I aim at the head or the chest in CoD?
Aim at the chest or lower chest when you clear a corner an enemy can strafe out of. Your first shots kick up into the upper chest and head. On a headglitch, aim at the top of the cover.
Does strafing activate aim assist in Black Ops 7?
On controller, only at minimum strength. If you only move the left stick, you get the weakest rotational aim assist. It gets stronger the better your right stick tracks the target. Strafing still makes you harder to hit.
Do you need Dexterity to aim while sliding in BO7?
No. Everyone can aim down sights while sliding, diving and wall jumping without a perk. You only needed Dexterity for that in the beta.
What controller sensitivity should I use in BO7?
Start at 1.6. Most CDL pros play between 1.6 and 1.7. If you're new to CoD, start at 1.4 to 1.45 and work up toward 1.6. BO7 is fast, and low sens makes it hard to track. There's no perfect number, so adjust from there.
When should you reload in a CoD gunfight?
After you back out of the fight and get behind cover. Not after a few shots when you still have plenty of ammo. If your primary runs dry mid-fight and you have a pistol, switch to it. In BO7 that's always faster than reloading.
