To get better at Search and Destroy (SnD), stop handing the other team the first kill. You get one life a round, so your main job is keeping your team from being outnumbered. The number-one SnD advice is simple: play your life. From there:
- Fight where a teammate can trade you. A trade cancels out the advantage from the first kill.
- Use your utility. Your tactical and lethal come back every round. Use them instead of dying with them.
- Use the clock. Learn the plant and defuse timings. Then use them to trap the other team in a round they can't win.
- Slow down when you're last alive. If the clock allows it, isolate the fights and let them come to you.
The ideas work in any CoD. The settings and numbers are for BO7 Ranked Play, which runs on the CDL ruleset. MW4's Ranked rules aren't out yet. For the aim side of every duel, pair this with gunfight fundamentals.
BO7 Ranked SnD settings: how a Search and Destroy round works
Ranked SnD isn't the SnD you play in pubs. It runs on the CDL's competitive settings:
| Setting | BO7 Ranked SnD |
|---|---|
| Round time | 1:30, 30 seconds shorter than public SnD's 2:00 |
| Win condition | First to 6, win-by-two off, so 5-5 goes to a single Round 11 |
| Sides | Switch every round, 10-second start time |
| Lives | One per round, no revives, no killcam |
| Bomb | 45-second timer, 5-second plant, 7.5-second defuse |
| Bomb settings | Silent Plant on, Reset Plant / Defuse Progress on |
| Friendly fire | On, with SR penalties and suspensions for incidents |
You also get less info. The minimap is on, and gunfire shows on it and on your compass. But there's no always-on radar, Enemy on Compass is off, and UAV and Counter UAV are restricted. The CDL turned Callout Pings off in its April 2026 settings (V1.1), so pros call positions over voice. It's not confirmed for Ranked. If pings are off in your lobby, call positions over voice.
What the clock means for you
A plant takes 5 seconds. If you're attacking and haven't planted, you need at least 5 clean seconds left on the round clock. A defuse takes 7.5 seconds. If the bomb timer drops under 7.5 seconds and nobody has started defusing, it's too late. Rounds are only 1:30, so you have less spare time than in pubs.
The opening: how do you stop dying first in SnD?
Why first blood matters
In the 2026 CDL Stage II numbers, teams that won the opening duel won 66.7% to 88.7% of those rounds. That's the range from the 12th-placed team up to the 1st. The best comeback team won only 39.5% of the rounds where it lost the opening duel. It's not new, either. In the CDL's 2020 numbers (Modern Warfare 2019, 5v5), the team that got first blood won the round 69% of the time.
Before you hunt the first kill, make sure you're not the first death.
Play your life and use the clock
Playing your life means using cover and taking the lopsided fights, where you have the numbers. Use the time on the clock. Don't rush in, die early and spend the rest of the round spectating.
A lot of gunfights are lost before anyone shoots. You got to a spot late, or you took a fight you were behind in. Before you challenge, ask yourself if you have the advantage. Taking a 1v2 from a bad spot because you think you're the better player is an ego chall, and it usually fails.
If you're hurt, back off. Stim Shot is restricted, so there's no stimming mid-fight. The Enforcer specialty's regen boost after a kill doesn't work in Ranked either. When you're one-shot, get behind cover and let your health regen. Then re-peek, or let a teammate take the fight. If you lose the first exchange on a headglitch, don't force it. Drop back down and regen before you come back up.
Come out of spawn already aimed
Come out of your opening route already aimed at the angle, so you only need small adjustments. That's centering: keep your crosshair where an enemy is most likely to appear, like the headglitch, doorway or corner you're about to clear. Spawns, the minimap, sound and where your teammates are tell you which angle an enemy has to come from. Don't run with your aim on the floor. Looking up and then flicking sideways is two movements instead of one, and fights are won in milliseconds.
Have your gun up before the enemy can see you. A common way to lose a Ranked fight is sprint-sliding for a split second instead of staying aimed in. Every BO7 gun has a delay before it can fire after a sprint, and it's longer out of a slide or a dive. After the Nov 21, 2025 update, for example, the M34 Novaline needed 250 ms after a sprint and 460 ms after a slide. The numbers change with patches. The lesson doesn't: stop sprinting before the angle, not on it.
Get information before you commit
Learn the maps and find angles that watch the routes the enemy takes. You get info as well as kills. Shouldering means strafing quickly in and out at a corner so the enemy only sees your shoulder. Use it for info. Shoulder the corner and find the enemy. Put your crosshair on that exact spot, then commit. If an enemy shoulders you, or you expect a re-peek from a known spot, start shooting before they fully come around the corner. For callouts, see the Hacienda callouts.
Don't get predictable
If you kill three players from a spot, they'll look for you there next. Ranked switches sides every round. The next time you're on that side, pick a different angle or cover. Running the same play one more time can still catch a team that expects you to switch.
How RankKD helps: RankKD marks the rounds where you died first and how often you die early. A death heatmap grouped by callout shows where.
Trading: how do you make your deaths count?
A trade is when your teammate kills the player who just killed you. It cancels out their advantage. Two players on an enemy's screen are better than one. In a round, that means:
- Push with a teammate instead of sliding out alone. When you can, hit a defender from two sides at once. Whoever they shoot, the other player gets the kill.
- Work the same enemy as your teammate. Even sliding out just to split their attention beats leaving your teammate in a 1v1.
- Stay close enough to be traded. An untraded kill gives the other team a free advantage.
- Watch your crossfire. Friendly fire is on in Ranked, so your bullets and lethals can hurt teammates.
Losing the first gunfight is fine if a teammate gets the trade. Push in twos and threes instead of making solo plays. It keeps people alive and can win you the player advantage.
How RankKD helps: RankKD shows whether your deaths got traded, and how often compared with players at your rank.
Utility: what's restricted in BO7 Ranked SnD?
Your tactical and lethal come back every SnD round. Even pros forget this. A grenade you never throw is wasted. Bounce a frag onto a player camping a view of the bomb site, for example.
Ranked cuts the list down:
- Tacticals. The CDL restricts the Pinpoint Grenade, Stim Shot, Hunter Bot and Decoy. Ranked also restricted the Flashbang on Feb 13, 2026 to match the pros' Gentleman's Agreements.
- Lethals. The CDL restricts the Cluster Grenade, Needle Drone, Molotov, Point Turret, C4 and Combat Axe. That leaves the Frag and Sticky Grenade from the launch lethals.
- Field upgrades. The Drone Pod, Echo Unit, Squad Link, Fear Trap, Black Hat and Scrambler are restricted. The Trophy System is allowed. Season 02 cut its Ranked charge rate to match normal multiplayer.
- Overclocks and perks. Overclocks aren't used in Ranked, so equipment works in its base form. Perk Greed is the only Wildcard, and Core and Hybrid Perk Combat Specialties don't activate.
- Gentleman's Agreements. If an item isn't on the CDL list, that doesn't mean it's allowed. Ranked also restricts anything the pros skip by Gentleman's Agreement.
With the Pinpoint gone, no launch tactical finds enemies for you. Enemy on Compass is off too. Your info comes from shouldering, sound and gunfire on the minimap.
For weapons, Ranked allows ARs, SMGs, pistols and melee, plus snipers in SnD only. The CDL restricts the Shadow SK and XR-3 ION. Sniper aim assist has been off in Ranked since Feb 13, 2026.
Plant, defuse and post-plant: how do you close out rounds?
Don't count on hearing the bomb
Listening for the plant or defuse is a classic way to find the player on the bomb. Ranked runs with Silent Plant on, so don't count on hearing a plant. Don't count on hearing a defuse either. When this CDL setting came in with Vanguard in 2022, it covered both.
Use the clock to trap them
On attack, make the defenders move first, or pull them away from the bomb as the timer runs down. Keep at it until there's no time left for a 7.5-second defuse. On defense, if the attackers haven't planted, keep drawing them out in the last 10 to 15 seconds. Don't take a fight you don't need. If you're retaking, 45 seconds is longer than it feels once the bomb is down. Your defuse has to start with at least 7.5 seconds left, though. That gives you about 37 seconds to clear the site and get on the bomb.
Retaking and defusing
Wiping the attackers after a plant doesn't win the round. You still have to defuse, so the 7.5-second cutoff still applies.
Don't blindly slide to the bomb. Shoulder until you see the enemy, then center and swing. Once you're on the bomb, decide whether to "stick it", meaning keep defusing even as danger closes in. Stick it when a living teammate is covering you, or when the enemy is too far away to reach you before the defuse finishes. Reset Plant / Defuse Progress is on, so letting go means starting over. Make the call before you start.
A ninja defuse is defusing as the last defender while attackers are still alive. If a teammate calls that the last attacker is far from the bomb, you likely have time to defuse instead of taking the fight. The same read works for a sneak defuse while your teammates keep the attackers busy. Pick your moment. In BO7 Ranked, that window has to cover a full 7.5-second defuse.
Post-plant separates teams, even pros
In the same 2026 Stage II numbers, post-plant win rates ran from 94.7% for the 1st-placed team down to 40.0% for the 12th. The best retake team won only 50.0% of its retakes.
Clutches: how do you win a 1v2 in SnD?
A clutch is winning a round when your team has fewer players alive. Here's how the five CDL players with the most clutches did across BO7's season, going into 2026 Champs (full clutch stats):
| Situation | Won | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1v1 | 31 of 42 | about 74% |
| 1v2 | 30 of 124 | about 24% |
| 1v3 | 5 of 124 | about 4% |
| 1v4 | 0 of 55 | 0% |
A 1vX only counts if the last player alive lasts 5+ seconds in it with more than 15 seconds on the clock. A plant resets the clock. Even pros rarely win outnumbered. Play your life so it doesn't come to that.
When you're last alive and the clock allows it, slow down. Make them come to you:
- Use what you learned. Your teammates' deaths and enemy sightings tell you where they are.
- Isolate the fights. Pick enemies off one at a time, or funnel them down a route you're holding and drop them as they come.
- Be patient. Let things come to you. With seconds left, listen for the last attacker running back to the bomb. Kill them, then defuse.
- Skip the ego chall. The player who's outnumbered usually loses it.
- Watch the clock. If the time left won't cover their plant or defuse, keep drawing them out. Don't take a fight you don't need.
The rest is reps. Play a lot of SnD and get experience in 1v1s, 1v2s and 2v2s. Every SnD situation is different.
How RankKD helps: RankKD flags the fights you took while down a player. It also breaks down your 1vX rounds: when you fought and how you used the clock.
Review your SnD rounds like the pros
Pro teams put serious hours into SnD VODs. Before winning CDL Champs 2023, one team was coming into the office at 9 AM just to watch SnD.
Do the same with your matches. Go through every kill and death. Check how close your crosshair was to where the enemy showed up. If you were way off, ask what map or sound cue should have told you. Count the fights you lost just because your gun wasn't up. Note whether you were in position to get traded, and write down how you died so you can spot patterns. The VOD review guide walks through a full session.
How RankKD shows where you lose SnD rounds
RankKD does the legwork. It finds those moments in every match, so you can spend your review time fixing them. RankKD records every match automatically. After the match, it breaks your SnD down round by round. You see the side you played, your kills and deaths, and every plant, defuse and detonation on the timeline.
What RankKD looks for in your SnD:
- First deaths. The rounds where you died first, how often you die early, and where, on a death heatmap grouped by callout.
- Deaths traded. Whether your deaths got traded, and how often.
- Outnumbered fights and clutches. When you took a fight down a player, and your 1vX rounds: when you fought and how you used the clock.
- How you died. Deaths while sprinting, reloading or re-peeking without info, fights you took while already hurt, deaths right after your own kill and deaths while swapping weapons.
- Grenades before you die. Whether you used your tactical and lethal before you committed, or died holding them.
- Post-plant and retake positioning. Where you set up after the plant, on both sides.
- Every gunfight graded. Fights won, first hit, time-to-kill and crosshair placement.
The coach's note links every mistake to the exact moment in the video, with your mouse, keyboard or controller inputs on screen. Each match gets an S-to-D grade against your own recent matches, plus your top 3 fixes in order. Every stat, trade rate included, is compared with your rank and the rank above. SR gained and lost per mode shows what SnD is doing to your rank.
Fair play: RankKD analyzes your match after it ends, never while you play. No overlays, no assists, no live info, no in-game presence and no mods. Read the anti-cheat disclosure.
RankKD runs on Windows PC and supports Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4 at launch. It records up to 4K at 120 frames per second on Pro and Elite, or up to 1080p at 60 frames per second on Free. Your inputs are recorded too. Recording and your match library are free, and your first full breakdown is on us. See how it works and coaching plans, or how Call of Duty coaching works in RankKD.

SnD FAQ
How do I get better at SnD?
Play your life. Keep your team from being outnumbered, use cover and take the lopsided fights. Fight where a teammate can trade you. Use your tactical and lethal every round instead of dying with them. Learn the plant and defuse timings so you can trap the other team with the clock.
What are the BO7 Ranked SnD settings?
Ranked SnD uses the CDL ruleset. Rounds are 1:30, it's first to 6 with win-by-two off, and sides switch every round. You get one life, no revives and no killcam. The bomb has a 45-second timer, a 5-second plant and a 7.5-second defuse, with Silent Plant on.
How do I stop dying first in SnD?
Come out of spawn already aimed at the angle an enemy has to use. Shoulder for info before you commit. Use the clock instead of rushing in. If you're one-shot, back off and regen before the next fight.
What is a trade in SnD?
A trade is when your teammate kills the player who just killed you. It cancels out their advantage. Move in pairs and stay close enough that your deaths get traded.
Can you forfeit an SnD match in BO7 Ranked?
Yes. A forfeit vote opens after the third round, and every teammate has to agree. A forfeit counts as a standard loss, not a quit. There's no extra SR penalty or suspension on top of the loss.
Do plants and defuses give extra SR?
There's no published SR value for a plant or defuse. The patch notes don't say how SnD scoreboard score is calculated. Since Season 04, every BO7 Ranked win is a flat +20 SR, plus a Scoreboard Bonus for finishing in the top 4. The higher you place, the bigger the bonus. Season 06 added 10 to 40 extra SR lost when you lose and finish 5th to 8th. So your scoreboard spot matters even in a loss. Season 06 also lists fixed Opponent Rank values. Outscoring players 3+ or 6+ rank tiers above you is +20 or +40 SR. Outscoring players that far below you is -20 or -40. The notes don't say whether those also apply after wins. More in BO7 Ranked SR explained.
