In Search and Destroy you get one life a round, so every death leaves your team a player down. Most rounds are decided by who dies first, and whether that death gets traded. Win those two things more often and you win more games.
Here's the short version:
- Don't be the first death. Take fights where you have the edge, and let the clock work for you.
- Stay where a teammate can trade you. A trade wipes out the other team's advantage.
- Throw your utility. It comes back every round.
- Play the clock at the end. Plant and defuse times win more late rounds than aim does.

If you like Search but want more say in your gear, try Collateral. It's MW4's round mode with a buy phase. See MW4 multiplayer modes.

Win the first fight, or don't take it
The first death costs the most
In CDL play, the team that wins the opening duel usually wins the round. In one 2026 stage, teams won between two-thirds and nearly nine in ten of the rounds where they got the first kill. Back in 2020, first blood won the round 69% of the time. That's why the first rule is simple. Before you go looking for the first kill, make sure you're not the first death.
Pick fights you're ahead in
Plenty of fights are lost before anyone shoots. You arrived at a spot late, or you peeked a player who was already aimed at you. Before you challenge, ask whether the fight is in your favor. A 1v2 from a bad spot is a bad trade, however good you are.
Have your gun up before they see you
Come around each corner already aimed where an enemy is most likely to be: the doorway, the window, the corner you're clearing. Then you only need a small adjustment. Stop sprinting before you reach the angle, not on it. A gun coming out of a sprint or a slide is slower to fire, and that's a lost fight.
Shoulder for info, then commit
Shouldering means strafing quickly in and out at a corner so the enemy only sees your shoulder. Use it to find out where they are. Once you know, put your crosshair on that spot and swing.
Change it up
If you got three kills from a spot last round, they'll check it next time you're on that side. Sides swap every round, so pick a new angle when you come back.
Get your deaths traded
A trade is your teammate killing the player who just killed you. It cancels out the first kill.
- Move in pairs. Two players on one enemy's screen beats one. Whoever they shoot, the other gets the kill.
- Stay close enough to help. An untraded death hands the other team a free player.
- Hit from two sides at once when you can. The defender can only look one way.
Losing the first fight is fine if your teammate gets the trade. Push in twos and threes instead of making solo plays.
How RankKD helps: RankKD shows whether your deaths got traded, and how often next to players at your rank.
What MW4 changes for Search
You'll hear less
Infinity Ward cut how far footsteps and gear carry during the beta. The aim is to tell you someone is close without giving away exactly where. The Ninja perk makes your own footsteps quieter still. Treat sound as a warning, not a position.
The bomb is quieter too. The beta also cut how far plant audio carries. Don't wait to hear the plant from across the map. Watch the site, or keep a player near it.
Radar still matters
MW4 has red dots on the minimap. A UAV shows enemies on it, and the Ghost perk hides you from UAVs, Portable Radars and Heartbeat Sensors. On a team that runs Ghost, an empty minimap doesn't mean an empty site.
Movement is more grounded
There's no omnimovement and no wall jump in MW4. Tactical Sprint only comes with the Blood Rush perk. Nobody slides sideways around a corner at you the way they could in BO7. You can steer or cancel a mantle, which makes climbing into a window less of a commitment.
Use your utility
Your tactical and lethal come back every round. A grenade you die with did nothing. MW4's launch list gives you good tools for Search:
- To get info: the Snapshot Grenade shows your team who's nearby for a moment. The Heartbeat Sensor shows nearby enemies.
- To take a site: the Smoke Grenade blocks vision. A Flash or Concussion slows the players holding it. Battle Hardened cuts how much the enemy's tacticals hurt you.
- To watch a flank: a Trip Wire, Claymore or Proximity Mine covers a route you can't.
- To heal: a Stim starts your health regen right away and shakes off a flash or stun.
- Field upgrades: the Smoke Wall covers a plant. A Trophy System near the bomb soaks up grenades on the retake.
Flash and Concussion were toned down a little for launch, so follow them up fast. The CDL hasn't published its MW4 restricted list yet, and Ranked's rules aren't out.
Plant, defuse and the post-plant
Learn the timings in a private match
Planting and defusing lock you in for several seconds. Time both in a private match before you play for real. Then you know exactly how much round clock a plant needs, and how late a defuse can start.
Use the clock to trap them
On attack, make the defenders move first, or pull them off the bomb as it ticks down until there's no time left to defuse. On defense, if they haven't planted, keep them busy in the last few seconds. Don't take a fight you don't need.
Retake as a team
Wiping the attackers after a plant doesn't win the round. You still have to defuse. Don't slide blindly onto the bomb. Shoulder until you see who's watching it, then swing. Once you're on the bomb, decide whether to stick it. Stick it when a teammate is covering you, or the enemy is too far away to stop you in time.
Winning a clutch
A clutch is winning the round from behind on players. Even the best CDL clutch players win only about one 1v2 in four, and almost never a 1v3. So the best clutch is the one you never have to play. When you're last alive and the clock allows it:
- Slow down. Let them come to you.
- Use what you know. Your teammates' deaths tell you where the enemy is.
- Take them one at a time. Hold a route and pick them off as they come, or find the one who's on their own.
- Watch the clock. If there isn't time for their plant or defuse, don't fight at all. Stall.
- Listen late. With seconds left, the last attacker often runs back to the bomb. Kill them, then defuse.
How RankKD helps: RankKD flags the fights you took while down a player. It also breaks down your 1vX rounds: when you fought and how you used the clock.
Review your rounds
Go back through your own rounds. For every death, check how far your crosshair was from where the enemy showed up. If you were way off, ask what sound or map cue should have told you. Count the fights you lost because your gun wasn't up. Note whether a teammate was close enough to trade you. The VOD review guide walks through a full session.
How RankKD shows where you lose rounds
RankKD records every MW4 match on its own, so there's nothing to press. After the match, it reviews the footage round by round:
- First deaths: the rounds where you died first, and how early.
- Trades: whether your deaths got traded, next to players at your rank.
- Deaths on the map: where you keep dying on each map, so a bad habit at one site stands out.
- Receipts: every mistake in the coach's note links to the exact moment in the video, with your inputs on screen.
RankKD analyzes finished match recordings, with no live coaching. No overlays, no assists, no live tactical advice, no mods (how RankKD stays fair). It runs on Windows PC. Download RankKD.
