Hardpoint in Modern Warfare 4 is won on the hill, not on the kill feed. The hill moves every minute. One player inside is enough to score, and you only score while nobody from the other team is in it with you. The first team to 250 points wins, or the team ahead when the five minutes run out.
So most games come down to two jobs. Get to the next hill before the enemy does. And keep their spawns away from it when it goes live.
MW4 Hardpoint rules at launch
| MW4 Hardpoint | |
|---|---|
| Win | First to 250 points, 5-minute match |
| The hill | Moves to the next spot every minute, in a fixed order |
| Scoring | One player in the hill is enough. You only score while it's uncontested |
| Hills per map | Five or six on the 12 core maps |
| Killstreaks | Holding the hill fills your killstreak meter as well as your team's score |
| Hardcore | Also in Hardcore, with a limited HUD, friendly fire and no health regen |
Infinity Ward reworked Hardpoint spawns between the beta and launch. Its aim is spawns that are "consistent and predictable". That makes spawns worth learning map by map. More on that below.
The CDL plays Hardpoint in its 2027 season on MW4, on five Hardpoint maps it hasn't named yet. MW4 Ranked Play is coming, but no date, modes or maps are out yet.
The hill order on every MW4 map
Hills always go in the same order on a map, so P3 on Lithium is the same spot every game. Learn the order and you can move before the hill does.
Each map has one rotation that crosses most of the map. That's the one that catches teams out:
| Map | Hills | Longest rotation |
|---|---|---|
| Cachette | 5 | P2 to P3, west side to south end |
| Coal | 5 | P2 to P3, east side to west side |
| Lithium | 6 | P3 to P4, east side to south-west |
| Lotus | 5 | P2 to P3, west side to the boathouse |
| Mumbai | 5 | P2 to P3, the market to the east side |
| Munition | 6 | P5 to P6, north-east to south-west |
| Nautical | 5 | P4 to P5, mid-ship to the rear deck |
| Reactor U92 | 5 | P4 to P5, south-west to the east side |
| Rooftops | 6 | P2 to P3, north-west across the whole roof to the east side |
| Sentry | 5 | P4 to P5, west side to east side |
| Silkworm | 6 | P4 to P5, south side to north side |
| Transit 213 | 5 | P4 to P5, south side to north side |
Rooftops' P2 to P3 crosses nearly the whole map. Every map page shows its hills on the tac map, and you can plan the run on the Tac Board.
Rotate before the hill moves
Know when to go
Each hill lasts a minute. Start thinking about the next one with about 25 seconds left, and start peeling off around the 20-second mark. Leave a lot earlier than that and nobody is left to stop the enemy breaking the hill you're still scoring on. On a long rotation like Rooftops' P2 to P3, send your first player sooner. On a short hop, like Cachette's P5 back to P1, you can stay longer.
Win the rotation, not the race
Being first to the new hill isn't the win. Killing the players rotating with you is. Teams that win rotations score far more. In one CDL season, the team that won the most rotations also scored the most points per minute. It was only mid-pack at holding and at breaking.
Spend the last seconds well
In a close game, one player can stay for scrap time, the last 5 to 10 seconds of a hill, while everyone else moves on. Everyone else goes. If the enemy owns a hill and you can't crack it, stop feeding it. Set up on the next one instead.
How RankKD helps: RankKD times your rotations. It shows when you left each hill and when you got to the next one, with your deaths on the way.
Make the spawns work for you
Your team moves their spawns
Where your team stands decides where the enemy spawns. Picture a line through the middle of the hill. If more of your team is past it than behind it, expect the enemy to spawn behind you. Keep one player back about as far as your furthest player is forward.
Push late kills forward
Late in a hill, play for the next one. A kill that pushes forward moves their spawn toward the back. A kill that backs you up hands them the spawn you didn't want them in. One player watching the side you don't want them spawning on keeps it that way.
Read your own spawns
If your teammate spawns behind you, the setup is holding. If they spawn across the map, someone from the other team is sitting on your spawn. Turn one player around to find them before you push. When you only have time for one call, call where the enemy is spawning.
Learn them in a private match
Load a map with one bot and note where it spawns after every kill on each hill. Then add players. Do it on the maps you play most. Spawns that are built to be predictable reward the team that learned them first.
Breaking a hill
- Hit it together, from more than one side. One player at a time through one door feeds the hold.
- Throw your utility first. Grenades and tacticals go in before you do. MW4 gives you plenty to choose from. A Flash or Concussion slows the players inside. A Snapshot Grenade shows your team who's there. A Shock Stick burns out their equipment. Flash and Concussion were toned down a little for launch, so don't expect them to win the fight on their own.
- Play off a team wipe. Count kills out loud. When three or four of them are down at once, push up and set up before they're back.
- Take free deaths. If you'll respawn right behind your team, an aggressive fight costs you little.
Holding a hill
- Don't stack it. One player scores. Everyone else covers the ways in, or one grenade wins the hill back for them.
- Funnel them. Lock the lanes so they can only come from one side. Then the hold stops being a guessing game.
- Heal between fights. After a fight, back off and let your health come back before you peek again. Quick Fix starts your regen as soon as you get a kill or hold an objective, and a Stim does it on demand.
- Eat their grenades. A Trophy System destroys up to three thrown or fired projectiles, and it comes back fast. Put it down before the grenades start.
How RankKD helps: RankKD splits your solo breaks from your team breaks, and shows your trade rate next to players at your rank.
Getting between hills in MW4
MW4 doesn't have BO7's omnimovement or wall jumps. Tactical Sprint isn't on by default either. It comes with the Blood Rush perk, in the second perk slot, and kills refill its stamina. If you're the player who rotates first, that perk gets you to the next hill sooner.
Mantles are more forgiving than you may be used to. You can steer one, aim during it or cancel it after it starts. A bad mantle into a hill doesn't have to lock you in.
Jobs on a Hardpoint team
Hardpoint roles are about jobs more than guns:
- The hill: one player inside.
- The AR: holds a spot that looks over the hill.
- The SMG: pushes out and locks down a lane.
- The anchor: watches the back and stops the late push that would flip the spawns.
Jobs move with the spawns, so somebody has to fill the gap. To learn yours, watch one map from a good player's view, pick one or two spots they use, and hold them in your next games.
How RankKD shows your hill play
RankKD records every MW4 match on its own, so there's nothing to press. After the match, it reviews the footage hill by hill:
- Hill time: how long you were on each hill, how much of it was contested, and whether you got to the new hill first.
- Rotations: when you left and when you arrived, against the hill clock, with your deaths on the way.
- Spawn flips: when the spawns turned and where you were when they did.
- Receipts: every mistake in the coach's note links to the exact moment in the video, with your inputs on screen.
RankKD analyzes finished match recordings, with no live coaching. No overlays, no assists, no live tactical advice, no mods (how RankKD stays fair). It runs on Windows PC. Download RankKD.
MW4 Hardpoint FAQ
How long is each hill in MW4 Hardpoint?
One minute. Then the hill moves to the next spot in the map's order.
How many points do you need to win MW4 Hardpoint?
- If nobody gets there, the team ahead after five minutes wins.
Do kills score points in MW4 Hardpoint?
No. Only time in the hill scores for your team. Kills still matter when they get you onto the hill or move the enemy spawns. Holding the hill also fills your killstreak meter.
How many hills does each MW4 map have?
Five or six. Lithium, Munition, Rooftops and Silkworm have six. The other eight core maps have five.
Which maps will be in MW4 Ranked Hardpoint?
Nobody knows yet. Ranked Play's maps haven't been announced. The CDL will play five Hardpoint maps in its 2027 season, and hasn't named them.
